There is nothing like a Nantucket Christmas!
An annual tradition of the Killen family of Nantucket is to launch their wooden dory into the Easy Street boat basin. This tree is adorned with a decorated and lit Christmas tree! A sight to behold—especially at night!
How many makers does it take to create this adorable ornament you ask?…..
Well, three actually! We had this sweet idea in mind and we just could not locate a wooden boat anywhere that met our specifications. After speaking with a new friend, we learned that her husband does amazing things with wood in his home shop. So, we reached out to Tom to see if he could make these boats for us. Tom was up to the challenge and got it right the very first time! Our idea was to also hang a Nantucket quarterboard on the side of the little red boat, and of course that had to be custom-made as well! We reached out to our friends at Upham Studios to create the quarter boards for us and they delivered! After all pieces were in place, Susan Fairgrieve of ACK 4170 adorned each tree with small beads and bells, a gold medal bow at the top for a star and painted the dorys red. We do know that the Killen dory is not red, it is brown and green. Since everyone loves the little red boat, which is the Sunken Ship, the 007 and the yellow dog boat, we figured red would be perfect for your Christmas tree! A gold hanger is attached for tree hanging. We’re going to put our on the mantle this year. Be sure to swipe through the photos to see Tom and the process along the way. These certainly did come out adorable, and took quite the collaboration! Mission accomplished. We hope you love them too!
